Turps Magazine

Turps Magazine is a free monthly magazine based in Newcastle, UK, which includes artwork, writing, photography, comics, reviews and music. Its aim is to promote and distribute work by artists who might not otherwise have a platform. They accept contributions from anyone who wants to be involved and everything they are sent will be considered. The magazine itself is available in bars shops and cinemas around the North East and also in Leeds, London and for order.

Ive recently become involved with the production and running of this Magazine. Its a great way to get your work seen on a larger scale. Ill be working on a new logo and website over the next few weeks. Also issue 4 is in the making which i have a few pieces in.

Explosion

I came across this illustration of ffffound.com. I think this is a fantastic style and uses amazing bright colours to protray the meaning. I think if i had more time i would like to attempt an illustration like this that was for 4Mations. I could imaging the Robot looking great in this style.

Chennel4: StarTrek Pre-loader / Sting

Pre-loader

This is a 30 second preloader for Film4 and their Star Trek weekend. First thing I noticed was the intense red colour that has always been a trademark of Film4. The darker edges draw the viewer in and create more depth in, otherwise, a quite flat ident. Further more depth is created by smaller visuals of the main feature being scattered around. These do not take any focus away from the main feature that takes a few seconds to appear. Another trick used is the glare of a bright light on the right of the screen, which I think is to look like the glare of the sun on a camera, this directly links to the Film4 channel.

The main feature itself is directly linked to Star Trek with out loosing any of its loyalty to Film4. Lots of bright white lines fall down the screen and slowly, line by line materialise the Film4 logo. This is obviously a recreation of the Teleporter in the film and acts as a cleaver stall of the appearance of the logo. This is done in the opposite action to finish off the feature. The sound in the background helps the ident out alot. Its a noise to sound like the Teleporter with some other sci-fi noises surrounding it. I think this ident could work with out sound but is twice as good with it.

The ident also is created in a way to look like the camera is slightly panning around the feature. This also is a small feature which helps this very simplistic ident look much more intelligent than it is.

I feel this indent remains true to itself while taking on a simple and fun path advertise its product, which is the Star Trek films.

Sting

This is the sting to compliment the pre-loader, this lasts a mear 5 seconds and i feel is very impacting for the shot time it is viewed. This sting again uses the deep red associated with Film4 and darkened edges. The camera glare is actually inside the 4 and is more prominent as it extends around the whole screen.

The idea behind this sting again follows the StarTrek theme. This is based on the famous Star Trek doors which open and close with intense speed with a recognizable noise. This sting I feel relies a lot on the noise that the doors make but as a double act are unmistakable. The frame of the logo creates a square which is simply closed in a horizontal fashion to create the look of the Star Trek doors.

ITV Pre-loader

Itv2 have 4 different idents all based around green logo. The Itv2 logo extends to reveal the number 2, which is the ITV2
logo. This then stays static as the different idents continue around it.

Then this ident continues in to many different pairs of feet dancing in wildly colored shoes. The angle in which you see the dancers changes so this is all happening around a still ITV2 logo that seems to be part of the sceen.

I really like the bright colours used in the different clothes especially against the white background, which also is part of the ITV2 brand. I also have realised that the shoes change colour, they fade in between greens and blues to reds and oranges. This is subtle but is a very graphical additive to the ident. The whole screen shakes when one of the dancers jumps close to the camera that I think is a very nice touch adding reality to the video. Some of the dancers blend in to one another that gives the quite jerky video a bit of smoothness and a cleaver link between each other.

I think this ident would be used on a Friday and Saturday night before exciting live shows rather teatime on a Tuesday. The ident is very lively, helped along by the unusual party music. I like the idea behind this idea and is pulled off very well. My only concern is as far as the ITV2 logo is a little lost throughout the video; maybe the colours used for the dancers could have been a palette of warm colours or something to compliment the green logo, instead of competing with it.

Pre-loader Storyboard

Here are my storyboards for the 4Mations pre-loader. The idea behind it is all about the 4Mations Robot. He is basically really clumsy and gets in to all kinds of trouble.

1: In this sketch the idea is: Channel 4 get there new 'branding' delivered to there studios.

2: But its actually the 4Mations Robot who breaks out of the box and smashes up the studio by accident

3: He them finds a button that says "do not push"... so he pushes it.

4: Theirs an explosion which reveals the Robot and then the logo.

4MATIONS

I have been asked to create a brand for a channel 4 sister company. Its called 4MATIONS and is a channel that will feature only animated content. For this, a logo, a sting, a pre-loader, web banner and website will be designed. After looking at previous Channel 4 branding i decided to go down a comic route. This was the first draft of the logo.

I felt i needed to include colour and make the 4 more recognizable. I had a play and decided on this red almost superman style number 4. The idea was this logo to become an animated robot in the stings and pre-loaders of the channel. I think this will create a more lively brand and lend itself to humor throughout the branding.

Toys

I Love Toys...

Was just looking through 'Dieline' for my research on packaging and came across this toy designed by
Javier López Pereyra. Its called "El Ramón" and is inspired by the dated idea of what robots would look like in the future, emphiseized by films like "War of the Worlds " in 1953, the tv series "Lost at Space" in 1965. The toy its self is a great piece of design and is hand crafted with Argentinean wood.
The packaging is what caught my attention. The cardboard is recycled and has a really nice grey finish which is complimented by the white silk screen print. I love the typeface used which matches the toys inspiration and compliments the design. The colors, layout and funky logos create a fantastic design which i would love to be the owned of.

Vision Poster

This is my completed poster for VISION. I decided to use the image and type i designed and used a soft colour palette picked from the image. I feel i have managed the hierarchy nicely as well as the white space. This poster would defiantly catch someones eye and could be kept in someones bedroom... which is the aim for alot of music night posters.

Fancy Dress...

Just came across these amazing pictures on www.lucyandbart.com. The blog is full of unusual extensions and modifications to the human form, including this blue facial fungus which looks like an alien disease, and this oversized grass monster which looks like something from a sci-fi movie.

Vision Type

For the Vision poster im working on i decided to create my own type as i could not find a typeface that could do the job. I designed this using square edges and 90degree angles. This combined with the grid eye image i think will work really nice together.

Vision Poster

I'm doing a poster for a house/techno night in Newcastle called Vision. While experimenting with different ways to illustrate the poster I created this using a very small image, only 60x50 pixels by adding tiny white grid throughout. The same applies to any image and i think could look great with the correct purpose. This is defiantly they way id like to illustrate my vision poster.

Leandro Castelao

I've just stumbled across these illustrations from Leandro Castelao, from Argentina. I think this style looks fantastic in creating the images he has. These images range from very simple objects such as a light bulb to quite complex interpretations of animals. As you can see the simplicity only goes as far as the shapes, the ideas behind these for fill a much deeper meaning or story. I especially like the dull colors used, these illustrations would have a compleatly different meaning if brash bright colors were used. I am a big fan of the circle and this ilustrator uses them in a very artistic way.

Natural Coke

Earlier i posted packaging for a can of coke which was concentrating on not using harmful inks and paints on the can. This is a bottle design for a natural bottle of Pepsi. The bottle is very smoothe and has an embossed Pepsi logo at the top. The type is very neutral reflecting the product. I like the way that the color itself has been used to sell. Its lighter than normal coke and also reflects the Natural Pepsi. I think in the future, all major companies like Pepsi will be launching products like this to keep up with the modern day diet.

NARC: CD Design

NARC: CD Cover
This is the CD cover which i designed for Narc magazine. NARC is a free magazine which published unsigned, interesting local talent. They also use a lot of local art and design work in there publications. The magazine comes with a free CD, this has a collection of tracks which represent the foundations of the magazine. I wanted to create an interesting design which played in the 'old skool mixed tape' look.  I used a biro pen to create most of the design, including the listed tracks on the inside. Im particularly happy with the front cover stencil which came out very neat, but still gave the look i was trying to achieve. I need to work on  the front cover of the magazine, this will be done in much of the same style as the CD cover.

Eye Development - Vision Poster

Vision Poster Artwork:
I was asked to design a poster for a new music night opening in newcastle. The name was Vision and i was to come up with a concept for the posters and flyers. I wanted to keep it very simple using a nice, close up visual of a human iris but done in a artistic way. These are three ideas i had to illustrate the iris. using colored pencils and strong lines to create the first. The second image, i used a cd for the color part of the eye and created the pupil using card and paint. Finally i tried using acrylic paint. I think these look visually interesting however, i would rather look at doing something more modern. Such as the Eye Grid i created on the previous post.

Coke Design

This is a post I was very interested in as as well as its beautiful design, it really outlines a way to create design while reducing the carbon foot print of the item. This is a quote from the blog I found it on, which explains bettter than me its meaning:

A conceptual package design, which at this time is unaffiliated with Coca Cola, created to drastically reduce the cost of both initial manufacturing and recycling.
“A convex logo substitutes colorfully sprayed can. Naked can help to reduce air and water pollution occurred in its coloring process. It also reduces energy and effort to separate toxic color paint from aluminum in recycling process. Huge amount of energy and paint required to manufacture colored cans will be saved. Instead of toxic paint, manufacturers process aluminum with a pressing machine that indicates brand identity on surface.”

I would like to maybe consider such thoughts when designing my own work in future!

Funny

Just some fun images

iDongle

This is an idea i had for a micky-take Apple advertisement. The idea is to say that you have to plug lots of extra hardware in to make any of the functions of  the iphone to work. Such as a keyboard to type texts with. Its just a small idea id like to expand on.

Packaging Design Evaluation

Packaging Design

I began with the branding and packaging of an orange juice. I was to aim the product at students and had a medium price bracket. After brain storming different ideas, including ideas for healthy pro biotic juice and juice aimed for improving performance, I decided to take a more fun route. This was in the form of Orang-Boom. The idea was to market the orange juice as a mixer for alcohol. I do not know of any other drink that fits in to this market. The drink would be an energy drink to compete with Red Bull. The name is a mock of the beer Oranjeboom which is a popular Dutch larger. The idea for the packaging was to take the idea of a beer can and apply it to my orange drink. This was to give the product a humorous and novelty feel which would defiantly appeal to our target audience. The product would be sold in packs of 4 with a plastic can binder, to give an authentic look. On the actual logo itself we started with an image of an orange and build a traditional beer logo around it. I feel this portrays the product in just the way I intended and would stand out against the other mixers on the supermarket shelf.

My next task was to rebrand some children’s cookies. I wanted to make the children the main focus for this rebrand. Because of this I decided on a quite interactive piece of packaging. I created a sleeve, which the cookies would slide into. This sleeve would have different designs on to make then collectable for the children. I initially created a design based on the layers of the earth which had different facts for the children to enjoy. The other ideas were of cartoon crocodiles and grabbing hands around the cookies. I especially like the way the cookies are visible half way down the packaging. I think this would appeal to the children as well as the parents. I would like to have finished the other ideas to create a set.

Finally I was asked rebrand 3 items from the baby products range from Nuby. I found this task particular difficult, and could not relate to the customer as easy as the last 2 products. Eventually I decided to market my design the mothers instead of the children as I think this is a common mistake in baby package design. I went with a strong typographic piece, which relied on the functions of the product to create the design. This was printed on  an organic looking card which I feel would give a nice feel to the packaging. The design has no pictures of the product so I decided to have a window on the side in which the product is visible. I feel this is an essential part, as I like to see what I am buying. The rest of the design is lead buy infographics on the back, which explain simply the products features. From struggling at first I am quite happy with the outcome of my designs. I think the color palette can help to do a job between different products. As well as give each design some individuality.

This shows my development of the orang-boom logo >

Organic Style

Here is a lovely piece of design with the word 'orgnic' oozing from it. I love the egg shell paper and the bold typeface. Great combination with a slight window used to show the product. The logo produced is a nice medium between old fashioned and modern.

This was designed as honey samples for Ort Farms in nj. It keeps eco friendly practices and overall footprint in mind. One sheet of very small paper is used to produce the whole package.

Nice Packaging

This is a very attractive design for porcelain cups and saucers. I like the use of type and organic looking card. The design is very fun and can be adapted to lots of different products. These are a few aspects i think that are similar in my design for the nuby packaging.

Design by Phil Wareing, British designer based in the Netherlands.

Nuby Packaging

I have been asked to look at repackaging Nuby products with the thought in mind of 'a new approach'. From this i decided to look at existing packaging and similar shop shelves? I wanted to approach this product package with a new idea for the market. Something that would stand out from the rest. As well as selling the product and getting across the important information

This is where my idea came from, i wanted to display the information in plain sight and create the design around it. This is the packaging for my Nuby bottle >

I have created a typographic design with a subtle colour palette contrasting against the brown cardboard. The small info graphics on the back illustrate the features of the product. The white bottle shape would be a window where the product could be seen and touched.

This is the whole range of product packaging for Nuby products >

Id like to get these made up to see what they would look like on the shelf
